Keith JenkinsNetherlands FlagNetherlands

Keith Jenkins is the Founder and Publisher of Velvet Escape, based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. For a decade he had a very successful career in corporate and investment banking. Like many, despite his success, his career had begun to feel empty. Through circumstances he was able to leave and take time for himself, never anticipating that the collapse of the financial sector in 2008 would end his chosen career. Not one to allow circumstances to get him down for long, he created an entirely new career for himself, following his passions for travel, writing and digital marketing in a way that he'd never realised was possible before. He wrote about his banker-to-blogger transition in his (free) ebook 'Travelations' and spoke about it at his TEDxTalk titled "Passion. Empowerment. Social Media" in November 2012.

Road Trip Itinerary

Activities Kms Stay
Day 1 As you head north to Langebaan from Cape Town, make sure to plan a photo stop at Bloubergstrand for an iconic view of Table Mountain. The Langebaan Lagoon is a saltwater lagoon most famous for its famous bird life and watersports. If you are a fan of seafood, this is the place to be! Just outside of this iconic town is the West Coast Fossil Park, a national heritage site where you can view fossils from sabre-tooth cats, short-necked giraffes, and many more! Recommended accommodations include the Tortoise Shell Trail Lodge or the Farmhouse Hotel. Stay here for one night. 135 Langebaan
Day 2 - 3 The route continues north towards Clanwilliam, a historic town located along the slopes of the Cederberg Mountains. It is famous for its Rooibos tea; a quick stop at the Rooibos Teahouse is a must-visit for tea lovers. If you are a hiker, there are a multitude of trails in the Cederberg Mountains where you can see stunning geological formations and San rock art, some dating back to the Stone Ages. Recommended accommodations include Cederberg Ridge Wilderness Lodge and Yellow Aloe. Stay here for one or two nights. 175 Clanwilliam
Day 4 - 5 From Clanwilliam, drive across the Cederberg, an unforgettable drive through three stunning mountain passes: the Pakhuis Pass, Hoek Se Berg, and Kouberg Pass. You’ll also pass the stunning Bushman’s Kloof Wilderness Reserve. Continue across the Cederberg and the barren plains; look out for Tafelberg, the lesser-known twin of Cape Town’s Table Mountain. Turn off to the Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve, a unique nature reserve that combines safaris and San rock art with accommodations carved out of the rocky outcrops. Stay here for two nights. 59 Cederberg
Day 6 - 7 You can either head back to Cape Town or extend your road trip by continuing along the Cape Winelands route. On your way back, you’ll pass Ceres, the citrus capital of South Africa, as well as some more scenic mountain passes. Should you choose to stay in Stellenbosch, do so for one night before making your way back to the Mother City. 172 Stellenbosch or Cape Town
