Johannesburg is a popular base of operations for international travellers thanks to its excellent airport and easy access to premier safari destinations like Kruger National Park. It’s also home to Sandton City, also known as the Richest Square Mile in Africa. Why not consider hiring a luxury car to explore in style?

When’s The Best Time to Visit Johannesburg?

You might be surprised to learn that Johannesburg has excellent weather year-round, although winter and summer months are very different. Summer is notable for intense heat and relatively high humidity. However, locals look forward to regular late-afternoon thunderstorms and plenty of rain, leading to mild, calm, and cosy evenings.

Winter, on the other hand, brings the biting cold. Temperatures sometimes dip below zero, but daylight hours are blessed with all-day sunshine and dry conditions. If you’re planning to visit Kruger National Park, stick to these drier months.

Getting Around Johannesburg

Public transport in Johannesburg is pretty much limited to the Gautrain. You’re much better off behind the wheel of a luxury car. This way, you’ll be able to explore every corner of the city without relying on shaky public transport. Johannesburg is also the largest city in the country, so it’s incredibly useful to be able to explore on your own time.

Where to Stay in Johannesburg

Johannesburg CBD

You can’t miss Melville for its pumping nightlife and range of eclectic restaurants. The recently-reinvigorated Maboneng Precinct is another lively urban area near the center of Johannesburg with a wonderfully cosmopolitan feel. Here, you can enjoy art galleries, bookstores, and open-air markets.

The CBD also gives you easy access to notable attractions like Soweto, the Apartheid Museum, and Gold Reef City.

Sandton

Known widely as Johannesburg’s upmarket district, Sandton is home to Sandton City Mall, Nelson Mandela Square, and The Leonardo: the tallest building in southern Africa.

Many of the city’s finest restaurants and nightclubs are in Sandton, alongside five-star hotels, high-end fashion stores, and rooftop bars. Despite being located north of the CBD, Sandton is actually considered quite central, too.

Fourways, Midrand, and Waterfall City

Sandton might be the new heart of Johannesburg, but Fourways, Midrand, and Waterfall City are quickly becoming incredibly popular among Africa’s elite.

Midrand boasts several luxurious security estates that accommodate residents and tourist alike, while Fourways has direct access to the city’s freeways. Meanwhile, you can satisfy all your retail therapy needs at the Mall of Africa in Waterfall City, one of the largest malls on the African continent.
