Swakopmund 4×4 Travel Advice

Introduction

Swakopmund is a coastal town in Namibia on the Atlantic Ocean and is just a four-hour drive west of Windhoek, Namibia’s capital. The Germans settled in Swakopmund in the 19th century, evidenced by the architectural and cultural influence in the town.

Today, Swakopmund is known as a coastal holiday town with pristine beaches, plenty of cafes and restaurants, and a range of accommodation options.

In and Around Swakopmund

After you’ve spent some time lounging on the beach, you can explore Swakopmund’s many adventure activities. Quad biking is one of the best ways to experience the sand dunes, and some tours pair this activity with sand boarding.

You can also experience skydiving, paragliding, dune-buggying, and horseback tours in and around the town.

Make sure to visit the Swakopmund Museum when you have a chance. It’s a mish-mash of cultural and natural history. If you want to see live animals, visit the Swakopmund Aquarium.

What to Explore Near Swakopmund

Swakopmund is sandwiched between the Namib Desert and the Atlantic Ocean giving it a one of a kind personality, perfect for a scenic road trip.

To the south, you can explore Walvis Bay and its spectacular flamingo colony. Meanwhile, if you follow the coastline northward, you’ll encounter the Skeleton Coast: a rugged stretch of coastline infamous for its numerous shipwrecks.

Of course, no Namibian self drive adventure would be complete without exploring the highlights of the Namib Desert, including Sossusvlei and the mighty Dune 45. If you want to see the Big Five, head north and do a self drive safari through Etosha National Park.

Getting Around

Although Swakopmund has several good, tarred roads, Namibia as a whole is more suited to 4×4 driving. With a 4×4, you’ll have no problem navigating long stretches of sand tracks and gravel roads, giving you access to the incredible wilderness areas around Swakopmund.
