The Top 6 4x4 Trails in the Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape often gets overlooked as a road trip destination in South Africa, despite being a playground of 4×4 trails and nature reserves. At most, people use it as a thoroughfare between Cape Town and Johannesburg, and the Western Cape’s Garden Route enjoys far more attention.

However, those in the know will tell you that the Eastern Cape is a veritable paradise, packed with stunning variety that spans the towering peaks of the southern Drakensberg Mountains, the rolling hills of the former Transkei, and the untouched tropical beauty of the Wild Coast. It might be trickier to navigate here compared to some other provinces, but the reward isn’t just incredible natural beauty – it’s the journey itself.

Ready to tackle the Eastern Cape in your 4×4 rental? Let’s take a look at six epic 4×4 trails you can explore on your next road trip adventure.

Challenging 4×4 Trails

Baviaanskloof

The Baviaanskloof route stretches between the little-known towns of Willowmore and Patensie. You can find it in the Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve, a huge cluster of protected areas that form part of the Cape Floristic Region World Heritage site.

The trail spans around 200 km in total, including river crossings, rocky trails, and some interesting wildlife, including kudu, Cape mountain zebra, African buffalo, and, of course, the chacma baboons (bobbejane in Afrikaans, baviaan in Dutch) that lend the area their name.

It typically takes two days to complete the entire trail, so you’ll want to stay over at one of several campsites in the reserve. Make sure to stock up on everything you need before you head in!

Grootrivierpoort 4×4 Trail

The Grootrivierpoort 4×4 Trail meanders through a secluded section of the Eastern Cape, connecting the Groot River valley with the surrounding rugged hills. This off-the-beaten-track route spans approximately 40 km and is known for its scenic views, river crossings, and rocky terrain.

The area is home to diverse wildlife such as kudu, bushbuck, and even the elusive caracal. The trail usually takes a day to complete, and due to its remote location, it’s essential to pack all your supplies ahead of time.

Tiffindell-Tenahead 4×4 Trail

Winding through the highlands of the Eastern Cape, the Tiffindell-Tenahead 4×4 Trail is a challenging yet rewarding drive, stretching for roughly 35 km. This trail navigates the remote Drakensberg region, reaching altitudes of up to 2,720 metres. Snow-capped peaks are not uncommon during the winter months, and the trail offers breathtaking views year-round.

Expect steep ascents and hairpin bends as you tackle rocky paths and river crossings. Due to its difficulty, the route takes around five hours to complete. Tiffindell Ski Resort or Tenahead Lodge makes for a perfect overnight stay after your adventure.
