Tourism Community Development Trust Charity Dinner

On Wednesday 27 October the Tourism Community Trust fundraising dinner took place at the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town. Attended by over 200 people the event raised over R123,000 for the benefactors, The Blomvlei Primary School in Hanover Park.

Blomvlei Primary School
The school’s headmistress, Dawn Petersen, delivered a moving speech portraying the challenges, obstacles and accomplishments of working at Blomvlei Primary School. Even at the primary level, drugs and gang culture infiltrate student life, with children as young as 11-years old testing positive for all manner of substances from dagga to heroin. The development of the Blomvlei Library has provided a welcome alternative to idle time that is so easily usurped by gangs and drugs.

The library is the first step in the Blomvlei Multi-Purpose Centre development, once complete the centre will also house a school hall, with a stage and indoor sport facilities, toilets and changing room, a catering kitchen, office space to accommodate community development organisations, an internet cafe, conference room, media centre, an crèche and recycling centre. Accompanying the indoor facilities are planned sports fields, hard court surfaces, a food garden and seedling nursery.

A live jazz band hailing from the Cape Flats rounded off the evening’s dinner, lucky draw, presentations and auction. A big thank you to The Mount Nelson Hotel who graciously sponsored the venue, food, wine and decor for the evening and have agreed to host next years event.

If you would like to have the freedom to explore the area you are visiting independently, you might want to look into car hire South Africa for the perfect set of wheels.
