Join the No Regret Friday movement

On a Friday afternoon, you usually want to do one thing, and that’s have a beer with a few friends at your usual hang-out place. “What a week” and “Thanks, bru. The next round’s on me” are the lines most often heard on that typical friday afternoon. It’s getting late and just as you’re downing those last few drops, you reach for your keys in your pocket and off you go. “No ways, I’m not one of those idiots who get behind the wheel all boozed up,” you say when a friend asks if you are OK to drive. “I’ll be fine, I only had a few, and besides, I live just up the road.”

Though you feel fine, you start wondering – how can you tell if you’re over the limit?

No Regret Friday

No Regret Friday (NRF), in conjunction with SABMiller (SAB Ltd’s parent company), has compiled some facts you should know about drinking and driving. NRF is a movement that has been created to encourage South Africans to think responsibly about drinking and driving.

According to the National Road Traffic Act, driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs with a narcotic effect, or with excessive amount of alcohol in blood or breath, no person shall on a public road shall:

• Drive a vehicle; or

• occupy the driver’s seat of a motor vehicle the engine of which is running, while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or a drug having a narcotic effect.

What is over the limit?

The law prescribes that the following is deemed ‘over the limit’:

• Concentration of alcohol in blood: 0,05 grams per 100 millilitres (all drivers), professional drivers: 0,02 gram per 100 millilitres.

• Breath alcohol content: 0,24 milligrams per 1000 millilitres (all drivers), professional drivers: 0,10 milligrams per 1000 millilitres.

According to the guys from NRF, SAB created www.talkingalcohol.com to assist people in making informed decisions about drinking alcohol based on accurate, balanced information. The site provides information about the risks and benefits of alcohol consumption and links to other valuable alcohol related resources.

NFR offers a place where you can read real stories from people who have been affected by drinking and driving; perhaps they’ve lost a loved one, had a close call or made a smart decision and got home safely.
