Summertime is here and everyone is trading in their coats and pants for shorts and sunscreen. The city of Cape Town really does thrive over the summer months with a serious influx of tourists from not just South Africa but all over the world. The destination becomes immersed in things to do and places to go. Hiring a car in Cape Town is an easy occurrence, so get out there and enjoy all that this great city has on offer.
Cape Town is famous for having some of the world’s most picturesque beaches and summertime is all about spending time in the sun and surf as the days become significantly longer. Here are three beaches to consider on your Cape Town summer holiday.
This secluded yet still accessible beach is situated in the Camps Bay area and is also known as Charles or Marilyn’s Beach. Every now and then, there is a fairly decent wave for surfers and the fact that it’s slightly secluded by boulders has made it a keen destination for those looking for a bit of tranquillity from the often congested Camps Bay.
This is one of the most exclusive suburbs in Cape Town mainly for the reason that it boasts one of the country’s most beautiful beaches. It’s also considered to be a great destination for surfing. One of the best along the Atlantic Seaboard for that matter, however, it’s warned to be careful to avoid strong currents. There are also no shops or streetlights in the area.
This destination is on the other side of the coastline from Llandudno in the Southern Peninsula where the water is slightly warmer; Kalk Bay is famous for many reasons. They also have a world class surf break, which when it works can be compared to a mini-pipeline in Hawaii. Make sure you go for lunch or a drink at The Brass Bell.
Hiking up Lion’s Head is a great summer pastime and on full moons, people hike up there during the evenings or night time. Another great aspect about this hiking route is it’s far less gruelling than other hikes nearby such as Devil’s Peak or Table Mountain.
The 12 Apostles hotel situated past Camps Bay on the way to Hout Bay is a great destination to enjoy a typical picturesque Cape Town summer sunset. With views of both the ocean and the mountains this really is a great way to unwind in style. Summer in the city is always beautiful, with sunshine that illuminates the buildings, people and nature. Company’s Gardens situated literally in the heart of the city is a great place in which to bask in the glorious summer sunshine. Feed the squirrels or simply just find a little piece of greenery and sunshine. An oasis in a busy congested part of the city, it’s also within close proximity to some of the city’s most established museums and art galleries.
This could be one of the most sought after trekking destinations within close proximity to the middle of Cape Town. The reserve boasts roughly 7 750 hectares of diverse and breathtaking flora which is another aspect which has made the location famous. It also has iconic views of the ocean and surrounding mountains and is a firm favourite place to visit during the summer months.
